Long known for its culture of fine arts, museums, history and stunning architecture, Sarasota has a number of distinguished and arts-themed events coming our way. Be sure to treat yourself to an afternoon of browsing exquisite pieces by artists of all genres. Let your inspirations flow as you please your mind and senses by attending any number of the great festivals scheduled this month that will enunciate Sarasota’s rich cultural offerings. Prepared to be bowled over with beautiful paintings, sculptures, jewelry and even antique cars. This is the month to appreciate the finer things in life, and as we can all agree, living in Florida gives us a definite advantage in that arena.
Jan. 15-17, Sarasota Art and Antiques Show, Sarasota Municipal Auditorium, 801 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota
Dazzling examples of furniture, paintings, sculptures, pottery, prints, rare books and watches will be on hand, featuring the works of 50 carefully selected dealers from all over the world. This popular art and antique show draws attendees from all over Florida and is highly regarded as one of the best art events around. The festival will run Friday through Sunday, with an early bird preview gala happening on Thursday benefiting Sarasota charity, Designing Women. Tickets for the gala will be $50 and can be purchased online. Weekend tickets for the show are $8 and can be purchased at the door. Get outdoors and capture the beauty and spirit of living in Florida in the wintertime. No snowshoes required on this one as you explore the wonders of this spectacular local park. Walk, run, or jog the 12-mile stretch of pristine hiking trails. See native Florida wildlife and greenery in an up-close and intimate setting. Well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome to enjoy the walk with you. Refreshments will be provided along the way, and afterwards, stay and enjoy an acoustic concert in the park while enjoying a light lunch. Set your sights on one-of-a-kind automobiles and listen for the rev of a finely-tuned engine as proud owners get ready to show off their prized possessions. Jan. 16-17, Sarasota Winter Fine Art Festival, Gulfstream Avenue, Sarasota
See amazing art come alive as Gulfstream Avenue transforms into a spectacular outdoor art gallery. This is another highly acclaimed art festival, drawing attendees from all over the state and also considered to be one of the best art events in the country. Exceptional examples of jewelry, paintings, sculptures, photography, glass and more will be on display and for sale. Artists will be on hand to discuss their wares and are available to do customized pieces as well. The Humane Society of Sarasota County will be there, and will have their adoption bus full of furry creatures waiting to find their forever home. The event runs Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm, and downtown parking is free on the weekend. Admission is also free. Jan. 16, Deep Space telescopes in Lakewood Ranch, Sunset to 10 pm
An educational and fun program, Sidewalk Astronomy, is presented by a local group, the Deep Sky Observers. Once a month in different locations around Sarasota such as Riverview High School and Lakewood Ranch, the group sets up their telescopes so attendees can view whatever is visible in the night sky on that particular evening. It’s a great way to introduce astronomy to children as well as brush up on your star-spotting skills. In addition, Deep Sky Observers also sets up for special happenings like lunar eclipses. What a wonderful way to enjoy the pleasant weather, under a star-filled Sarasota sky. Jan. 19, 7:00 P.M., The Gala of the Royal Horses, Robarts Arena 3000 Ringling Boulevard, Sarasota
Sarasota welcomes an extraordinary equestrian event that has only been seen at famous riding schools in Vienna and Spain until now. Exuding grace and magnificence with every move, these amazing horses will delight and entertain you with their stature and expertise. The Royal Horses of Europe have been used by royalty, horse riders, and bull-fighters, and they will impress you with their fantastic agility and grand appearance. Gala of the Royal Horses includes the Andalusian, Friesian, Lipizzaner and Arabian breeds. You will also get to enjoy the mellow strumming of guitars as they provide the melody for the vibrant Spanish Flamenco Dancers.
