With warmer than average temperatures and nothing but sunshine coming our way, it is the perfect time of year to get out and explore the surrounding areas. With an abundance of beaches and parks, why not pack a picnic and see where the day takes you! Several interesting festivals and creative events happening at local venues will have you stopping to smell the roses and enjoying the good life wherever you go. Enjoy delicious locally caught seafood and fish while grooving to the sounds of live music, or enjoy learning about the rich heritage of Native Americans. Jan 22-24, Sarasota Native American Indian Festival, Sarasota Fairgrounds, 3000 Ringling Blvd., Sarasota
Enjoy exhilarating examples of Native American Indian culture, dance, clothing, food and music as this popular festival makes its way back to Sarasota. As a tribute to famous Native American artist, Rex Begaye, you will see his art masterpieces which depict the traditions and customs of generations of Native Americans. You will be able to find handmade pottery, sculptures, paintings and jewelry and taste the homemade comfort food, available for purchase that has been enjoyed by festival goers for years. Little Big Mountain and the Big Mountain Dancers will be entertaining attendees with Native American drumming, fluting, singing and dancing. Tickets for this event are $8 for adults, $3 for ages 6-12, and free for children under age five. Delectable seafood, that is about as fresh as you will find, will be served at this outdoor event along with a healthy dose of live music on outdoor stages. Add in rows of vendors who will be selling creative and innovative wares from local and regional artisans, libations, and the scenic beauty of Downtown Sarasota, and you have the recipe for a great weekend. Wear your comfortable shoes as you’ll want to dance the day away to the exciting sounds of jazz, calypso, reggae, and good old-fashioned rock and roll. Come celebrate winter in Sarasota where you’ll arrive hungry and leave satisfied after dining on locally caught seafood. You’ll want to be sure to take some food home from this one. Hours of operation are 10:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Saturday, and 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. on Sunday. The Sarasota Gateway Rotary 2nd Annual 5K Dash for a Difference is a fun filled morning for all ages! Runners and walkers will complete a certified 5K course and celebrate afterwards with a fantastic post race party - complete with food, drink & entertainment! This is a chip timed race. Awards will be given to male and female Overall, Youth, Masters, Grand Masters, Senior Grand Masters, Veterans & 3 deep in 5 year age groups. All race participants will receive an awesome race shirt and goodie bag. This event will benefit a variety of local and international projects sponsored by the Sarasota Gateway Rotary Foundation. Pre-registration is $25, price increases to $30 after January 8th, and $35 on race day. Make a difference and have a fun filled morning all at the same time!
