South Lido Beach

A BEAUTIFUL BEACH AND NATURE PRESERVE

South Lido Beach is a breathtakingly beautiful beach adjacent to a 100-acre park and nature preserve at the southeast tip of Lido Key. The beach area features grills, picnic tables, a volleyball court, a children’s playground, restrooms, and the beautiful, powdery-white sand that makes so many Sarasota County beaches so remarkable. In the summertime, lifeguards are on duty during weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

North of the beach, Ted Sperling Park is the site of a delightful nature trail with hiking paths and observation decks. Paddleboard, kayak, and canoe rentals and tours are available onsite. Fishing and bird-watching are also immensely popular. Mangrove forests and majestic pines, complemented by the hiking paths, dominate the flourishing interior of the park.

Otto Schmidt Zoldan, one of Sarasota County’s early pioneers, settled in 1904 at the south tip of Lido Key and applied for a homestead which included the land that is now Ted Sperling Park. In 1974, Sarasota County acquired the property and established the park as South Lido County Park. In 2009, the park was renamed for former county commissioner Ted Sperling, a leader of the historic Save Our Bays movement.

South Lido Beach and Ted Sperling Park are open from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., 365 days a year. Children are welcome, and most of the park is handicapped-accessible. Admission is free, and plenty of free parking is available at both entrances. Sorry, but no pets are allowed at the beach or park. Currents can run swift along some parts of the shoreline, so swimming is restricted to designated areas. Entrances to South Lido Beach and Ted Sperling Park are located at 2201 Ben Franklin Drive and at 190 Taft Drive.

South Lido Beach is part of the South Lido Key community. The residences are a blend of spacious modern condos on Lido, single-family luxury home on Lido, and magnificent waterfront estates. Some of the homes sit on man-made canals and feature private boat docks, but even the inland homes offer spectacular, panoramic views and a quick walk to the shoreline. South Lido Beach is just one of a long list of reasons why vacationers and homebuyers so often select Lido Key as their destination.
