Sarasota Downtown Holiday Parade: 19 Years of Spirited Tradition - December 5th at 7:00pm
Posted by See Sarasota Live on
The Sarasota Downtown Holiday Parade returns again this year, just like a friend who comes home for the holidays making things complete and bringing good will and cheer. That’s right, folks, it’s time for the parade! Grab your chairs, a light jacket and your good cheer and find a spot along Main Street for this year’s parade which is shaping up to be one of the biggest, brightest and bling-dazzled events in the area.
The action gets started on the first Saturday of December, just like clockwork, which means on Dec. 5 at 7:00 P.M., the anticipated arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus will be imminent. A highly-charged, energetic parade of thousands of participants’ promises there will be squeals of delight from the young and young at heart. Schools, marching bands, civic groups and sparkling floats with thousands of lights will promise a white Christmas, Florida-style, where you’ll enjoy the holiday sights and sounds from the comfort of the great outdoors without that messy white stuff. The theme for this year’s parade is “All I Want for Christmas,” and there will be a great representation of walkers, marchers, floats, cars, motorcycles and more. Be prepared for clowns, candy and singing, and if that’s not enough, you’ll probably see well-choreographed dancers keeping the pace of the parade while they twirl and whirl. Our youngest elves and reindeer will hardly be able to contain their excitement. It’s going to be a great evening of community bonding and what better place to view a parade and spend time with friends than in beautiful downtown Sarasota.
The Mayor’s Trophy will be awarded to the float that resonates the theme of the parade the best. Rest assured, people put their all into winning the coveted first place trophy, ensuring moving animation, full illumination, and music and a little mayhem will be found throughout the parade. Other categories include Best Business, Best School, Best Nonprofit, Best Church, Best Walking, Best Holiday Theme, and Best Performing, allowing for several floats to be recognized.
The parade is expected to draw more than 25,000 attendees so get there early so you can find your spot and avoid last-minute jockeying for viewing positions. The parade begins at Hollywood 20 on Main Street and travels to McAnsh and Palm Avenue. Aah, December in Florida! What a great time to head downtown for a parade. And make sure you wave to the big guy in the red suit bringing up the tail end of the parade. Show Santa how nice Sarasota folks are!
