Intertwined in Sarasota’s rich and multifaceted history is the Sarasota Sailing Squadron. This local sailing club is one the area’s amenities that has evolved to become an iconic pastime for those who love to sail. This is partially due to the idealic location on Sarasota Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, where blustery winds coming off of the surrounding waters make a sailor’s job easy. But the squadron was also created to meet the sailing needs of an underserved nautical community who found traditional yacht clubs perhaps too pricey. The members have been willing to work together by incorporating affordable membership fees with a volunteer- based system, often using the honor system to take care of the needs of the squadron. This well-run ship has also been able to facilitate growth to a tune of over 150 events a year. And, by the way, they occupy one of the most coveted pieces of property in all of Sarasota. In operation for over 70 years, the Sarasota Sailing Squadron has capitalized on tradition and location in an admirable way.
Sarasota Sailing Squadron offers members a multitude of races, regattas and fun events to keep you deeply entrenched in your sailboat or involved in countless activities onshore. With the beauty of Sarasota Bay and the breezes blowing off of the Gulf of Mexico, anxious sailors feel the call of the water when they lay eyes on the colorful sails in the horizon. With a prime waterfront stage at Ken Thompson Park, they have the perfect location for viewing premium events like 4th of July fireworks, holiday boat parades, and, of course, grand sailing regattas. This is a beautiful venue for members to gather for great racing, potlucks, fun, scenery and rivalry between fellow sailing enthusiasts.
Since 1946, the squadron has sponsored an annual Labor Day Regatta, which has grown to become the largest sailing regatta in the southeast. Their racing schedule is also loaded with squadron regattas, invitational regattas and regularly occurring bay races. In addition, they partner with several other organizations that utilize their facilities and participate in races. One of these groups, the Luffing Lassies has had a decade’s long relationship with the Sarasota Sailing Squadron. This group started with a few women pioneers who came together in the ‘70s with a passion for sailing and initiative and drive to get behind the helm in a world that wasn’t used to seeing such brazen females. Today the group continues to nurture and instruct the love of sailing to women of all ages and continues to be an integral part of the squadron.
In addition, the squadron offers a variety of cruising platforms, youth education, countless social activities and more. Fleet rental, storage, showers, washers and dryers and camping is also offered onsite. Take a drive out to City Island and walk the area, taking note of the beautiful Sarasota Sailing Squadron, just another gem In Sarasota’s treasure bag.
